miguel99 saysFri 28th Nov 08@08:25 pmWhy do you use "an" before "taqool"? The Arabic books I have seen don't have it. They just have "...anna taqool.......?
-
very practical again - words can come in handy in certain situations(hm) - question : you use 2* ان one time without and one time with sjadda - what is the difference ?
-
With regards to the an before taqool. Simple rule, if two verbs follow each other then put an in between. For example,
تستطيع أن تتكلم عربي؟
You able to speak Arabic?
Notice أن comes between تستطيع and تتكلم. Usually the structure is:
- 1st verb something like able to, can, try etc
- Then followed by an
- then following by the second verb
With regards to the second an with the shadda أنّ
This is just an emphasis word. In this sentence it can be translated to "that". The sentence will still make sense without it but it sounds better with it. An example in English:
Are you trying to say my breath smells?
- with an
Are you trying to say that (أنّ) my breath smells? -
thanks very clear explanation - hey guys you are very good - keep doing this please

I'm trying to accomplish one lesson per day. I have had 3 semesters of Arabic and find these are great suppliments to my studies. I just want to thank you very much. You have done sincere and accomplished work for many people and I want to give my sincere appreciation.

Either one person is paranoid or one person is a bit blunt or (the most likely case) both persons are just having a laugh. This may not be a conversation you're likely to hear among Arabs, but what the heck... why not teach them a little English humour in the Arabic language!
