Hay Mark,
Yes جراد is a collective noun. To make a collective noun singular just add ة at the end. E.g.
Chicken
دجاج – Dajaaj – Collective Noun
دجاجة – Dajaajah – Singular
Stone
حجر – Hajar – Collective Noun
حجرة – Hajarah - Singular -
Thanks Moshaya! Useful tip.

There are quite a lot of books about Egyptian Arabic. One of the most interesting is Dirr's "Colloquial Egyptian Arabic". It's very old-fashioned, but contains an introduction to Egyptian Arabic grammar, narrative texts with English translations, and useful vocabulary lists.

In today's lesson we go through a monologue taken from a Disney movie called "A Bug's Life". Many western movies are typically dubbed to Arabic in Egypt , so the Egyptian dialect will be the focus of today's lesson. This means the words are pronounced slightly differently, but don't let this put you off as the actual words are common in all dialects. Plenty of useful vocabulary to feed your brains so tune in!
