Great Azeem, here is a couple more
عيد سعيد - Happy Eid - 3eed Sa3eed
عيد مبارك - Blessed Eid - 3eed Mubaarak -
Yes, Eid is about up! But a good time for reflection and atonement. I was wondering and pondering an Arabic/Ottoman Turkish question I posed it to my Arabic speaking friends, but the there's still not 100% agreement on this here it goes: I postulate that the reason Egyptians say "Aiwa" for yes, is due to a misreading of the spelling and pronunciation of their once former Ottoman rulers. I do not know much about Ottoman script, I've been to Turkey a few times, and can read most of the script with no problem, a few extra letters and different connecting rules, but it is my understanding that the Turks used to write "evet" or "yes" in Turkish like this: ايوة
اي = "eh" sound
و = "v" sound
ة = "t" sound
I believe in Ottoman script any word that ended with a "t" would be written with "ة" in Arabic/Ottoman.
Thus if you look at the word in Arabic you would read it "Aiwa" as opposed to "evet", and so that's perhaps how Egyptians developed the word instead of "N3m" the traditional word for "yes" in MSA.
Okay, so this may be old news, and maybe every Egyptian and Turk already knows this, but as I was explaining it to my Arabic speaking co-workers they were shocked and interested in this connection. Any other ideas or postulations? Oh, hehe and another great lesson!

Beginner - When is Eid?
September 22nd, 2009 | 1 comment |
Eid is a time of happiness that many Arabs celebrate. It is a time when families get together, when everyone wears new clothes and when the young ones get their 3eedeyyah (gifts). So it should not come as a surprise that "When is Eid?" is a common question especially among the young. Tune in for another culturally rich Arabic lesson.
