tomest05 saysTue 13th Oct 09@11:26 pmWholly fascinating lesson! I love language and linguistics so this was a fantastic learning point, particularly because it isa list of Arabic collocations that has probably never been compiled like that in one place! I am impressed, great work by all who helped put that together and the listener who contributed! This is what is great about Arabic Pod, great teachers and a collaborative learning environment. I've got several Arabic vocabulary books, but none so interesting as this one! Thank you!

In this podcast Ehab and Mohamed touch briefly on cultural aspects of collocations. These aspects need to be examined in more detail. In some cases an Arabic collocation may have an exact counterpart in English, but the Arabic collocation may have culture-specific connotations which are unknown to people who are unfamiliar with Arabic culture in general and the Arabic media landscape in particular. A good example is provided by “the opposite direction”, which may be rendered in Arabic as “al-ittijah al-mu’akis” (ﺍﻠﻤﻌﺎﻜﺲ ﺍﻻﺗﺠﺎﻩ). In recent years the Arabic word combination “al-ittijah al-mu’akis” has acquired polemical connotations because it is the title of an immensely popular and controversial chat show hosted by Faisal al-Qassem on Al-Jaziira. (I apologise for the fact that the Arabic words are the wrong way round. They have been reversed by a mechanism beyond my control.)

Today's lesson, which was sent to us by one of our listeners, is about collocations. The term collocations might not be familiar with many of you but it's definitely worth discussing if you love languages. It simply refers to a sequence of words that appear more frequently than others. For example, when you think of ArabicPod, you think of podcasts, so 'ArabicPod Podcasts' is a collocation.
