KarenFaucheux saysTue 12th Oct 10@10:13 pmThis reminds me of what I experienced early one morning last week. I walked into the kitchen without turning on the overhead light - there was enough luminosity from the hall and who wants to be "blinded by the light" at 5.30 a.m. - when I discovered something that looked like soil in the sink. I tried to rinse it down the drain when suddenly it frantically headed up instead - in my direction!!!. Arghhh, عنكبوت!

ty so much this help me very much

The last word in the text needs to be explained. What is the past tense of this verb (3rd person singular, masculine)? What is the present tense (3rd person singular, masculine)? And what is the masdar?
-
What about the second word in the last line (ﺍﺑﻌﺪﻩ)? Is this the imperative of the verb ﺃﺒﻌﺪ? Or could it be the infinitive of ﺒﺎﻋﺪ? Since both verbs mean “remove” and are somewhat similar in appearance, it isn’t easy to decide where the imperative comes from.
Such queries could be avoided if the principal forms of each verb were discussed in the podcast and listed in the table at the end of the transcript. Why is there no grammatical information in the table? -
ابعد(to remove) is a type 4 verb- glad for once I can help you desmond - most of the time it is the other way around- cheers

Just curious, but does Arabic have it's own words for all of the different species of insects or do you just borrow the words from other languages? Just, for example, where I come from in Pennsylvania, we have a ton of "daddy-long-leg" spiders,
وماذا تقول’ترانشولة’ بالعربية؟
Wa black widow? -
And while you're at it, what's the Arabic word for "Arachnaphobia"?
-
Salam wa jazaka-Allah Khair Ustaad Saleh and Mohammed. I like lessons like these that incorporate expressions & phrases that we can use in daily life.
-
BTW. Google Translate gives the answer to my question below... (of course, google translate is not 100% reliable always)...

: رهاب العناكب -
Hi Ehab, hi Mohammed,
Na7la and I were wondering how to say "spiders have 8 legs". Thanks in advance! -
We say:
العناكب لها ثمانية أرجل
Easy :) -
Merci, Plop! Mais qu'en est-il du dernier mot du texte? Connaissez-vous ce verbe?
-
Dear Jenkki,
It’s relatively easy to find Arabic words for insects on the Net. If you key in “Arabic vocabulary guide” and run a Google search you’ll find a pictorial dictionary with a section devoted to insects. Click on the drawings and you’ll hear how the words are pronounced by a native speaker of Arabic. The words are all high-frequency items like ﺑﻌﻮﻀﺔ (mosquito). -
I just stepped out on my balcony, only to find something dark and big dangling there from upstairs.... If it will be gone tomorrow, I will know what it was... عنكبوووووت.....
Could we go back to the Mouse in the House, please???
:) -
spiders are arachnids not insects, so looking for daddy long legs may need an arachnid search.
-
hi guys, just wanted to say that your dialogues are brilliant! Is it you who's making them up ? I agree that half fos7a half colloquial is the way that Arabic should be taught! Well done!
-
It would be nice if you could explain the song at the beginning of arabic pod net that we listen to. Also I often hear you say 'Kil Hada', probably 'over here'?
-
hi desmond - according to hans wehr : اورى = type 4 verb : to strike fire(root :ورى) - hope our teacher can shed light if this is ok
bàt -
Merci, Plop. Je vais me renseigner auprès d'un locuteur natif.

General comment,
I am very much enjoying the lessons. I lived in the middle east for years (late 90's) but didn't make the progress in the language that I should have as I was short on time and the tools just weren't available yet. I have been told I have excellent pronounciation and these lessons are building my vocabulary and conversation skills.

Don't turn away, press play; there is a great spider, who scares and frightens her; Hope we convinced you to stay. Don't worry, you won't hear another tacky rhyme in the lesson. Just some entertaining Arabic for your ears.
