quest saysFri 15th Oct 10@04:51 pmThank you for another useful Levantine lesson. The second word in the key vocabulary means "you cut" and not "you can", right? just a typo, I presume.

I went along to my usual hilaq in Bethlehem for my usual shave, but it was a particularly busy morning. Fatefully, as it turned out, he entrusted me to his young son who proceeded to slice my cheek with a nice two-inch gash below the eye. The blood was profuse as were the apologies and the boy spent the rest of the day sweeping up. Meanwhile I looked as if I'd been boxing.
-
...oh, and more pertinently, what is the appropriate noun for 'a shave'? Can you give us some vocab for facial hair styling: beards, goatees and the rest? Thanks!
-
Yes, QUEST, that is a typo - apologies! تقص/ي means "you cut (m/f)." Thanks for pointing that out.
I'm also sorry to hear about your "adventure," MIDEASTMC. The word for shave in Levantine is just حلقة, unsurprising, no? As for the vocabulary for styling facial hair, I'm going to ask Mohamed and Ehab to weigh in on this one. Back to you shortly. -
BTW, folks, I realize I missed a bunch of comments in previous lessons. I think I've now answered all of them. Please let me know here if there are any others from older lessons that I failed to answer. Enjoy the weekend ;-)

Beginner - Levantine: Hair Cut
October 15th, 2010 | 1 comment |
Having a haircut in an Arab country is not only a cheap but also an excellent way to practice your Arabic. However, in this situation it's vital to talk in Arabic correctly as you don't want the hairdresser to misunderstand and give you a Mohawk hairstyle! Sierra & Elias are the hosts in today's Levantine lesson.
