lovely grub, tell yer mum, as we said in the streets of london, that piece was so refreshing, and the post lesson commentary nailed it down.....what is the arabic word for humility?
-
@berry - pass me some of whatever you're grubbing on :-p
My dictionary has 2 nouns for humility.
توضاع and اتضاع
As an adjecive, humble comes up with the following meaings:
مُتَوَاضِع - humble modest unassuming simple modest small insignificant trivial
ذليل - low lowly humble subservient servile cringing submissive
وضيع - lowly humble menial mean base low ignoble
حقير - low base mean menial poor despicable contemptible

To my knowledge, in Arabic, ALL countries, towns and villages are treated as feminine. The only exceptions are names of some Arab countries. Notable masculine country names are Iraq (العراق), Lebanon (لبنان), Jordan (الأردن), Morocco (المغرب) and Sudan (السودان). -

One more point, which I read somewhere. In Arabic, all geographical names are definite, with or without ال. -
@vinod - My Spidey Senses are telling me that perhaps it is because in Arabic, proper nouns are Definite whereas in English they begin with a Cap letter.
Are my Spidey Senses hot to the touch or should I replace my antennae? -
@aliya thank you for humble...my copy of hans wehr dictionary was mega cheap and the font is very small so I have an aversion to using it.

aliya----here is a place which works well for me in tandem with the modern teachings of arabic pod.......http://abdurrahman.org/arabic/lqtoronto.com.html

Geography is not everyone's favourite subject, but one must know enough of it in order to avoid the embarrassment of not being able to answer a simple geography question correctly. In today's lesson, you will learn some geography as well as some of the general Arabic terms associated with it.

Just to confirm: New York (and any other city) would be considered feminine since مدينة is feminine, correct?
