Thanks for another useful lesson. I have a question on the root of تدعون. I am not sure what the past tense of this verb would be?
Also on the verb تبكي. How would I say "you (feminine) cry"? Would it be simplyتبكين? In other words one of the ي get dropped?
Thanks,

The past tense of (تدعون) is (دعا). And yes you are right, to say (You cry - fem) just use (تبكين).
Hope that helps -
Thank you Ehab - shukran!

@Ehab
The past tense of تدعون is دَعَوْا not دعا hence دعا is the past tense of the verb يدعو/ تدعو it is singular, but تدعون is plural

@niletrader - thanks for the clarification, but it's my fault for asking a mixed question - I asked for the root then the past tense. What I really wanted was the root/3rd person past tense, and this is what Ehab provided. But you are also right, technically speaking.

Great lesson! I am learning about food and eating out in my Arabic class and this really helped fill in the missing pieces that my professor isn't teaching. I'll be listening to it again (and reading the script) and I will let you know if I have any questions!
شكراًً -
Salaam to all.
I am confused, تدعون has the root word دعو or دعا. And the lesson explained it as انتم لا تدعونه يبرد which means 'You don't leave the food to become cold.' But as far as what I have read in Arabic learning books, the word دعو means 'to invite'? I am confused. -
RajulunSaaleh , this is where you find the power of short vowels (َ ُ ِ ). If you want to say (you leave it) then that would be (tada3oon تَدَعون). Now if you wan to say (you invite) then that is (tad3oon تَدْعون), so it has a (sokoon ْ ) on the (د). So these are two different words.

Beginner - Hot food

The food is ready, and the host gives the go ahead. Everyone reaches out for the best part! It's a race for everybody to get just enough, but there are obstacles, one of them the food being too hot!

One thing for sure though, if I grab the last piece of Damascus bread at the same time as someone else, we'll definately have a showdown! :bug:
