madha takun al kalimat - now?
هلا حلاء -
Dear arabicpod team, this is my first entry, so first of all congratulations for your really awsome website! You do a great job with the pods!!
I would like to ask some questions on the lesson:
- The verb to feel (أحسّ) looses the alif in the dialog, is this because of the dialect?
- What is the verb for يهريك I can't find it in the dictionary (I've tried هرى and أهرى).
- I had studied torture as عذاب, what is the gramatical difference with تعذيب?
Thanks!
Best Regards! -
@jayrag , now is (هلأ) in levantine and (الآن) in classical Arabic.
@amm , welcome to the website and thanks for your nice words.
- On (أحسّ), yes it is because of the dialect the verb (أحسّ) looses the alif.
- The root of (يهريك) is (هرى). I guess you don't find it in the dictionary because it is used more of a colloquial word, though it still exists in classical Arabic, and one can say (يهري الولد ملابسه بسرعة).
- As for (نعذيب), it means (torturing) so it describes the continuous/gerund of the verb.
Hope that helps. -
@amm
Ehab already answered your third question, but let me share my knowledge.
عذاب
Torture - Verbal noun of Form I verb
تعذيب
Torturing - Verbal noun of Form II verb
Form II verbs have a causative or intensive meaning.
For example, the Root – j m l
jamula / yajmulu – to be beautiful – Form I regular verb
jamaal – beauty – Verbal noun of Form I
jammala / yujammilu – to beautify – Form II regular verb- causative or intensive meaning
tajmeel – beautification – Verbal noun of Form II
Note the similarity between
جمال and عذاب
تجميل and تعذيب
Learning Arabic is trying to figure out the strict pattern it follows!

Intermediate - Levantine: Being tortured
December 30th, 2011 | 1 comment |
Believe it or not, Arab theatre has been depicting the horrible reality of being tortured and oppressed by fellow country people for over 30 years. Today we go through a dialogue from a scene of an old play which shows things have not changed since the 80s.
