@climacus, طماطم is another word for tomato and is widely used. It's used a lot in colloquial in the Gulf and Egypt, whereas بندورة is used a lot colloquially in Levantine.

I learnt طماطم for tomatoes; is that more colloquial as it seems a transliteration from English -- or in use in Egypt? [my teacher when I learnt vegetables was from Egypt]
