There is a famous Arabic<>English dictionary called 'Al Mawrid', also you can use google language tools which very useful and free, click on my name below to access it.

I have a question regarding جوال which you said in the lesson is basically used for the phone, but also for any other portable object. Is there and arabic word for laptop, is جوال also used in this connection?

Dear Na7la,
The official term for “laptop” can be found in the Arabic version of Wikipedia. There is an article entitled “mahmuul (ﻤﺤﻤﻮﻞ) haasuub (ﺤﺎﺴﻮﺐ)”. “Haasuub” is the official term for “computer”, and “mahmuul” means “mobile”.

I meant to write "haasuub mahmuul". The adjective has to be placed after the noun.

I second that, in fact people sometimes call mobile phones (محمول) as well, but the most common one is (جوّال) as we mentioned in the lesson.

Desmond, on top of the comments text box there is a link to show an Arabic keyboard on the screen (Show Arabic Keyboard), have you tried to use that?

Yes, thanks, Ehab. I have tried to use the Arabic keyboard, but it’s very difficult to combine Arabic and English in a single text. When I manage to get Arabic words to stay in place, the English words are rearranged from right to left and the text becomes an awful mess. I now understand why so many Arabic-speaking teenagers find it hard to use Arabic keyboards properly and prefer to use the Arabic chat alphabet. I think I’ll post a comment on recent developments in the Arabic-speaking world. It may be of interest to other Arabicpod fans.

Perhaps I ought to add that there is another Arabic word for “mobile”. This is ﻤﺘﺤﺮﻚ (mutaharrik). ﻤﺘﺤﺮﻚ collocates with ﻜﺮﺴﻲ (chair) and ﺼﻮﺮ (pictures). “Suwar (ﺼﻮﺮ) mutaharrika (ﻤﺘﺤﺮﻜﺔ)” means “cartoons”, while “kursii (ﻜﺮﺴﻲ) mutaharrik (ﻤﺘﺤﺮﻚ)” means “wheelchair”.

Arabic in Windows operating systems seem to work very well, I believe it is the Mac computers that suffers from technical problems with right-to-left languages.

Can I just ask how reliable the arabic Wiki translations in general are? I guess this question was already asked and answered before... Anyhow, if the translations are good than Wiki should be an excellent dictionary?
Unfortunately here in Germany there is not a good selection of arabic dictionaries, the most extensive is Wehr, but it has not been updated in aro. 20 years and the last teacher I studied with here is working on the new edition (supposed to come out this summer). But of course these dictionaries are very costly....

It is (sa2atakallam سأتكلم), Rafa. Don't get puzzled with the use of number 2, it is used as a (hamza ء).
It seems this is the time to make an application to teach the steps of writing Arabic words, we shall add it to the Activities page, once we make it.
