The Arabic terms for punctuation marks have been listed in a book by P. F. Abboud and E. N. McCarus, Elementary Modern Standard Arabic, Vol. 1, Cambridge University Press, 1983, p. 10.

I'm interested in the old forms of punctuation that existed before the influence of Latin languages. Are they the small markings above words in the Qur'an?

Ye Jookieapc, they are those marks that guide the reciter to know where to stop and where not to. We might actually do a lesson about it if we find people are interested in knowing more about it

Tajweed right? That covers more than regular punctuation, it covers tone too I think.

Regarding the question mark - Arabic has هل and the starting أ to make sentences into questions. Although the ؟ helps do you think it was fairly clear what was a question and what wasn't before the question mark, Mr Sale7?

Wow! I'm astonished at how many words I actually understood in this lesson. Maybe it's time I returned to Lower Intermediate before I fall victim to the "Big Head. While I have been through all the lessons at least ten or more times,it's back to the drawing board! Perhaps after another ten times I'll even be capable of repeating what I've learned...come to think about it, the lesson on too much praise Leaps to mind!

Thanks for this lesson! I also just came across the use of / between titles and real names e.g.

علي عبد الله صالح /فخامة الرئيس

Is this just something used in news?

@minnacc, فخامة الرئيس means His Excellency the president. Yes it is used in the news sometimes

Hi, thanks for your answer, but actually I meant the use of the "/" between the name of something and a description. It seems to be used in the same way I would use a comma.
Like: David Cameron, the Prime Minister, went to the cinema. Would be:
David Cameron/the Prime Minister/ went to the cinema.
