Thank you for the poignant lesson! I would like to know some other related words regarding recent events.
I have seen the word ثورة for "revolution". Is it "thawra" or "thoora"?
Also how do you say "demonstrations"?

The vowel in ﺛﻮﺮﺓ (thawra) is like the vowel in ﻤﻮﺖ (mawt) or Ger. “Haut”. You’ll find the word for “demonstration” in the lower intermediate lesson entitled “On strike” (line 2).

I think "Western backed" is a propagandistic term. Are the dictators in Libya and Iran "western backed"? Even the Egypt and Tunisia cases aren't so crystal clearly possible to describe this way. What US/UK election has dealt with the issue of the question "do we vote for Hosni Mubarak"? Anyway, I'm happy that these countries seem to be opposing dictatorships now... I just hope that they replace autocracy with democracy and not theocracy (or another autocracy)...

You said the poem as written by Ahmed Mater. Do you mean Ahmed Mater Al-Ziad Assiri (born in 1979)?

Ahmad Matar was born in in 1954 as far as Wikipedia says. Googling (أحمد مطر) or (Ahmed Matar) would give plenty of details about him.
