Nice lesson, I hope cockroaches are not edible..

The word Chocolate comes from Nahuatl, the Aztec language ("xocolatl")and means "bitter water". Other Aztec words we daily use are tomato ("tomatl")and avocado ("ahuacatl").

yeah , very interesting , very practical and ready to use (as most of the time).
In general insects are a good source of cheap proteines and as such a good alternative to meat. In certain parts of the world people do eat insects daily as a protein supply .
Will take some time before i will change my sources of proteines though .

In the gulf countries many people eat locusts. I think locusts are just a little bit less repulsive than cockroaches.

I have never tried cockroaches or locusts and I don’t think I will be trying any time soon

By the way, the word insect in Arabic is pronounced 7asharah and written حشرة

although ta2kul is a present tense verb, can you say "anta sofa ta2kul"?

Yes you can, but the tense will become future because of (sawfa - سوف).

i am having a hard time with the differences between the words for "to say" - "akul" and "to eat" - "akul". Can you clarify?

Stagediva432, I think the main difference probably arises from the difference between the kaf (in "to say") and qaf (in "to eat") letters. There is an excellent pronounciation guide here in this site and there are also a number of videos on how to pronounce these letters and words containing them. e.g. http://learn-arabic.wonderhowto.com/how-to/pronounce-arabic-letters-kaf-and-qaf-correctly-394963/

This chart has Arabic spellings and from that, you can also see that there is a "wow" vowel in "to eat" which elongates the "o" sound a bit more between the consonants. http://arabic.desert-sky.net/verbs.html

Generally speaking pronounciations in Arabic follow the way the word is written so if you can see that, along with vowel markings, you can discern nearly exactly how it should be pronounced.
